Task 3.2 - Food Wastage
Watch  the clip 'Feeding Nine Billion' until 7:06min

When you respond below please make sure to title the comment starting with "task 3.2 (followed by your group)"

Questions
1. What three things have the victims of the food crisis done to oppose rising food prices?
2. What percentage of food will we need by 2050?
3.What 4 strategies are needed to solve this problem, and tell me a bit about them? (2:44min)
4. Why is producing food to cover our need going to be hard to do? (this is scattered throughout the clip so be prepared to notetake)

Task 3.1 - Food Wastage

'According to staggering statistics from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), roughly one-third of the food produced worldwide for human consumption is lost or wasted, amounting to some 1.3 billion tons per year. In the developing world, over 40 percent of food losses occur after harvest—while being stored or transported, and during processing and packing. In industrialized countries, more than 40 percent of losses occur as a result of retailers and consumers discarding unwanted but often perfectly edible food...' - Taken from 'Food Waste' article

    1. Economic, Environment, Socio-Cultural-Political

    2. Farming Foods - Farming is sustainable because you can eat the food to survive and plant more with seeds from the food.
Economic Growth - Money could pay for healthcare and other important things.
Story Telling - The story remains in memories so they are sustainable.
Recycling - If you recycle old useless things become new useful things so it is sustainable.
Reducing - Reducing using things that harm the environment like cars and plastic will make the world a better place to live.

    3. Because although the three types of sustainability seem very different they all end up meaning the same thing.

    4. Sustainability is protecting the world and environment so that future generations will have a life as good or better and safer than ours.

    3
when food is wasted an thrown into landfill it can create leachate with absorbs chemicals witch is bad for earth.

  12. Question 1.) The people throw away all the food.
Question 2.) Wasting money and food that could of easily been used.
Question 3.) The earth benefits because when the food is thrown away and gets onto our earth's soils or materials then oils and chemicals can come out of it and help it.
Question 4.) You can use leftovers and find a recipe where you can use all that food to make a meal, or use food that you think has gone off and use it for another meal, e.g: brown bananas are best for banana bread.

  13. Amity and Amanda -Task 3
    1) families and restaurants waste leftovers or foods that are past there use by date even though they are perfectly fine to eat.
    2) the consequence are that when the left over food goes into the landfill it eventually goes into the ground and effects our water and air.
    3) We couldn't find this on the article but we think that it will effect the homeless and people that eat restaurants and shops old food.
    4) Reducing food waste can be done by serving less food at restaurants and making the sizes realistic for the people eating. Also people should make sure they use all the food at home eg; meat for dinner before they go and buy more.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1-families and restaurants are throwing away perfectly fine food.
2-the consequence is that it effects are land/earth
3-when foods chemicals go into the earth it makes something called leachate. so it will benefit the earth if there was less food waste
4-you only buy enough food for what you will eat and if you buy too much then make food with it/ freeze it eg. because with old bananas it makes nicer banana bread or old milk is better for scones/recipes.

  15. Task 3 Comment
A)Nz house Holds waster $563 per yr of food which is 79 kilos = 122,547 tons per year enough to feed 262,917 people
    B) The consequences of wasting food leads to releasing chemicals into the air and water increasing pollution
    C) Wasting less food helps with landfill and feeding more people
    D) To reduce food waste we can only buy enough food to feed us and no more so we don't throw some away

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1: Us, whenever there's something wrong with our food even if its only small most of us will throw it away.

2: Its a huge waste of money, most children don't even get food and we are wasting what they could of had.

Question 2. You waste money that could be used to buy more things that you would actually use
Question 3. Mother Nature because the greenhouse gasses destroys the ozone layer then burns the trees then mucks up the food cycle which causes animals to die then us because all the animals that we eat die

    b) If we waste food then we are wasting resources that are used to make food. After a long time we will not have enough resources to survive.
    c) Everyone
    d) Make unnecessary best before dates longer as some are shorter than what is needed so people chuck food out when it is perfectly fine.

Question 1 producers Consumers Retailers and the Transporters

Question 2 You lose roughly 593 dollars per year by wasting food,After along time by wasting food there will be less food when the
population, you wast enough to feed 262,917 people or double the population of Dunedin

Question 3 The consumers would win because they would not have to buy food as often if the didn't waste food on the other hand the retailers would lose because they would make less money selling food.

Question 4 Have a conpost bin, Have smaller portions,Feed scraps to animals e:g Pigs sell older or less appealing food for half the price.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Task 3
1: The people. food manufacturing companies, restaurants and food retail stores.
2: The consequences of wasting food are that it wastes a lot of money, It wastes the environments resources like the water and seeds it takes to grow the food.It also wastes the workers time, energy and effort. It takes land to grow food so when the food is wasted the animals habitat that was destroyed to make a field was all for nothing.
3:lots of bakery's throw out bread after one day because it's not fresh enough, but lots of people who don't have much money would benefit from this food. Also if the food can't be given to humans then lots of animals like pigs would appreciate it.Also waste food can be used for composting, that way it goes back into the earth and the cycle starts all over again.
4: We can make sure we only buy enough food for ourselves and not too much. or we could compost and give extra food to animals.

    Ryan, Ben C and Heath

    2. Scientists think we will need an additional 50%

    3. Science + Tech - Some scientists are saying that using current technology we could improve farming yield by 50% Distribution - We have enough food for everyone but it is being wasted and being distributed poorly so some people aren't getting enough
Local Food Systems - Local farmers can act as a buffer if extra food is needed.
Regulation - Farms shouldn't be able to have so many animals because it can lead to a lot of waste.

  26. Task 3.2 - Kareina and Grace

1.The victims have Rioted, Smashed markets, and toppled governments.
    2. By 2050 we will need 50% more food to feed the earth's population.
3.The 4 strategies we need are 1. To use the available science and tech 2. Better distribution 3. More local food systems 4. Better regulations.
4.It is going to be hard to produce the food we need because energy prices are rising so it is hard for farmers to pay for the energy they need to grow food. And the weather is getting hotter which means that many plants can't grow properly. Also these things happening means that food prices will rise because there won't be much food to go around and the poor people will starve.
